What Is a Solar Damper?
A solar damper is a mechanical damping device used in solar tracking systems to absorb vibration and reduce excessive movement caused by wind loads and dynamic forces.
Unlike a linear actuator, which drives the movement of the solar tracker, a solar damper controls and stabilizes that movement. By minimizing wind-induced oscillation, it helps improve tracker stability, reduces stress on mechanical components, and supports reliable long-term operation in demanding outdoor environments.
In utility-scale solar tracking projects, dampers are typically installed at key structural positions where higher wind loads may occur, helping the entire tracking system operate more smoothly, safely, and reliably.
Why Do Solar Tracking Systems Need Dampers?
Strong winds are one of the biggest challenges for utility-scale solar tracking systems. Without effective damping, wind-induced vibration and excessive movement can increase stress on actuators and structural components, potentially affecting long-term system stability.
Solar dampers help absorb vibration, control excessive movement, and improve the overall stability of the tracker structure. Working together with linear actuators, they help the system operate more smoothly under changing outdoor conditions.
How Does a Solar Damper Work?
A solar damper does not generate movement. Instead, it provides damping resistance against excessive motion, helping reduce sudden vibration and control oscillation caused by wind and other external disturbances.
During normal tracker operation, the damper works together with the tracker structure and drive system to help stabilize movement without replacing the positioning function of the linear actuator.
Designed for Solar Tracking Systems
The U21A solar damper is developed for photovoltaic tracker applications where controlled damping is required under wind and other external disturbances.
Its force capability and installation dimensions are selected together with the tracker structure and project conditions.
