This year, construction officially commenced on the Xizang Kaitou Anduo County Tushuo 100MW Tower Solar Thermal Power Station—the world's highest-altitude tower concentrated solar power (CSP) plant. Revered as the "Everest of CSP," the project is located in the high-altitude Tanggula Mountain area at 4,650 meters above sea level. It stands as Xizang's first tower CSP plant and the world's first tower CSP project developed in a high-altitude, remote power grid-end region. The groundbreaking marks a critical milestone, representing a landmark step forward for the world's highest and Xizang's inaugural tower CSP facility.
As a key energy project under Xizang's 14th Five-Year Plan, the flagship CSP station adopts advanced molten salt tower technology. A total of 16,000 heliostats covering 800,000 square meters reflect sunlight onto a central receiver tower, heating molten salt to 560°C. The high-temperature molten salt then undergoes counter-flow heat exchange to generate high-temperature, high-pressure steam, driving turbine generators to convert mechanical energy into electricity.
Upon completion, the plant is projected to achieve an annual average power generation of 260 million kWh, saving 60,000 tons of standard coal and reducing 165,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. It will deliver stable, reliable clean power to Anduo County and surrounding areas, effectively easing winter power shortages in northern Xizang.
