When selecting a linear actuator for a solar tracker, tilt angle is an important parameter.

But here is one detail that is easy to overlook:

A solar tracker tilts 30°. Is the linear actuator also working at 30°?

Not necessarily.

Tracker Angle and Actuator Angle Are Different

The tracker tilt angle describes the position of the solar panel or tracker structure.

The linear actuator has its own working angle, which depends on the actual mounting position.

If the actuator’s two mounting points are at different heights or positions, the actuator angle changes as the tracker moves.

So even when the tracker tilts forward and backward by the same number of degrees, the actuator’s installation geometry may not be symmetrical.

Simply put:

Tracker angle ≠ Actuator angle.


What Should Be Considered?

When selecting a solar tracker linear actuator, tilt angle alone does not show the complete installation condition.

It is also useful to consider:

  • Mounting point positions
  • Installation dimensions
  • Required stroke
  • Full movement range
  • Load requirements

So besides asking:

“What is the equipment’s tilt angle?”

It is also worth asking:

“What angle will the linear actuator actually work at throughout the movement?”

Understanding this difference gives a clearer picture of the actuator’s actual installation and movement.
