What is a linear cylinder

Linear cylinders are suitable for providing linear in or out linear motion for a variety of applications. Available in single-acting (spring extend or spring-return actuators) and double-acting versions, with single- or double-lever configurations, non-rotating and precision non-rotating models. It is a cylindrical metal part in which the piston is guided for linear reciprocating motion. The working fluid converts thermal energy into mechanical energy through expansion in the engine cylinder; the gas is compressed by the piston in the compressor cylinder to increase the pressure.

Linear actuators are used in machine tools and industrial machinery, computer peripherals such as disk drives and printers, valves and dampers, and many other places where linear motion is required. Hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders themselves produce linear motion.

Pneumatic systems use compressed air to create rotary or linear mechanical motion and power applications that "work". A single acting pneumatic cylinder or actuator has a port where air enters and then pushes the piston in only one direction. The piston is then returned to its original position by a spring.
